Solar Battery Storage Brisbane Buying Guide: Sizing, Run Time and Payback

This guide is for Brisbane and Ipswich homeowners weighing up solar battery storage who want straight answers on size, run time and payback. Most of the sun your panels catch lands while the house is empty, and that surplus goes back to the grid for very little.

A battery keeps that power for after dark. Whether it’s worth the money comes down to how much solar you export and when you use power. If you already know you want one, our solar battery installation service in Ipswich and Brisbane handles the switchboard work and the Energex connection paperwork in the same job.

Is it worth getting battery storage with solar in Brisbane?

Yes, for most homes that export a lot of solar during the day and use most of their power after 4pm. A battery stores that daytime surplus for the evening. It makes less sense if someone is home using the solar as it’s made, or the array is under about 5 kW.

A battery usually earns its keep faster when:

  • Your retailer app shows more than 10 kWh exported on a typical sunny day
  • Most of your power goes on air conditioning and cooking between 4pm and 10pm
  • You want power through summer storm outages, which needs a backup-capable system
  • You charge an EV at night or plan to

It’s harder to justify when someone is home all day soaking up the solar directly, or when an older 3 kW array barely covers daytime use.

For an independent view, the Queensland Government’s external guide to choosing a home battery for your household makes the point that your tariff and daily usage pattern decide whether the technology saves money. You’ll find both on your own power bill.

How to size solar battery storage for a Brisbane home

Size the battery to what you use between sunset and sunrise, then check your panels can actually fill it.

  • Find your overnight usage. Your retailer app or smart meter data shows usage by the hour. Add up 5pm to 7am on a normal weekday.
  • Work out your surplus. A 6.6 kW array in Brisbane typically makes around 24 to 28 kWh on a clear day. Take off what the house uses while the sun’s up, and that’s what’s left to charge the battery.
  • Go with the smaller number. A 20 kWh battery on a 6.6 kW array with an 8 kWh daytime load will rarely charge to full, even in December.
  • Read the usable capacity. The spec sheet lists usable kWh, which can sit below the number printed on the box.

If the two numbers are miles apart, the right move is sometimes more panels first and the battery second.

How long will a 10kWh or 20kWh battery last?

Quick answer: A full 10 kWh battery runs a home drawing an average of 1 kW for about 10 hours, and a 20 kWh battery for about 20 hours. Add air conditioning and those hours drop fast. Divide usable kWh by your average load in kW to get your run time.

Household loadAverage draw10 kWh battery20 kWh battery
Overnight basics: fridge, standby, ceiling fans0.4 kWAbout 25 hoursAbout 50 hours
Typical evening: lights, TV, cooking, fridge1 kWAbout 10 hoursAbout 20 hours
Evening plus one 2.5 kW split system2 kWAbout 5 hoursAbout 10 hours
Evening plus ducted air conditioning4 kWAbout 2.5 hoursAbout 5 hours

These figures assume a full battery with close to its rated capacity usable. Output matters too. A battery rated for 5 kW continuous can’t run ducted air and an electric oven together, however much charge is left.

Working out the payback on a home battery

Every kilowatt-hour you store instead of exporting saves you the gap between what you pay for grid power and what your retailer pays for exports. That gap is the whole return.

  • Daily kWh shifted: close to the usable capacity on sunny days, less through winter and wet weeks
  • Yearly kWh shifted: allow around 300 good cycling days rather than 365
  • Yearly saving: kWh shifted multiplied by your import rate minus your feed-in tariff
  • Payback: your installed price divided by that yearly saving

A 10 kWh battery cycling most days shifts around 3,000 kWh a year off the grid. Multiply that by the rate gap on your own bill and you have a realistic yearly saving to hold against your quote.

Check that payback against the warranty. Most home batteries carry a 10-year warranty, with usable capacity fading gradually over that time. If payback runs past the warranty, the battery is mostly buying you backup power and less reliance on the grid.

What to look for in a solar and battery package in Queensland

No single solar and battery package suits every Queensland home. The right one is sized to your usage and fits your existing switchboard. Compare these points on any quote:

  • Usable capacity and continuous output in kW, which tell you more than the headline kWh
  • Blackout backup: whole home, essential circuits only, or none
  • Whether the battery works with your existing inverter or needs a hybrid inverter
  • Warranty length and the capacity or throughput it guarantees
  • Whether the battery is on the Clean Energy Council approved products list
  • Who does the install: licensed electricians in-house, handling the whole job from quote to handover

If you don’t have panels yet, a new solar panel installation for your Ipswich or Brisbane home can be designed alongside the battery, so the array is sized to fill it rather than the other way round.

What a solar battery installation involves

Most battery jobs follow the same steps, and the switchboard is usually where surprises turn up.

  • Site check: wall space in the garage or on a shaded side wall, clear of hot western afternoon sun
  • Switchboard check: older boards with ceramic fuses or no room for new breakers often need an upgrade first
  • Grid approval: Energex has to approve the connection before the battery is switched on
  • Commissioning: setting up backup circuits and the monitoring app on your phone

BRIX Electrical & Air is a CEC accredited solar installer with licensed electricians in-house, so the battery and any switchboard work stay with one team from quote to handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best solar and battery package in Queensland?

No one package is best for every Queensland home. The best option is sized to your evening usage and your roof, with a backup-capable battery and licensed electricians doing the whole installation, including any switchboard upgrade work it might need.
A full 20 kWh battery lasts about 20 hours in a home drawing 1 kW on average. Run ducted air conditioning alongside normal evening loads and that drops to around five hours before the battery needs recharging from your solar.
A full 10 kWh battery lasts about 10 hours at an average 1 kW load. That usually covers a typical household from late afternoon until the morning, as long as the air conditioning isn’t running for most of the night.
Yes, when the system is set up for backup. Some batteries back up essential circuits like lights, the fridge and a few kitchen power points, while others cover the whole home. Not every battery or inverter has backup built in.
Yes, most existing solar systems can take a battery. Older inverters sometimes need swapping for a hybrid inverter, or the battery is AC-coupled with its own inverter. Your switchboard also needs a proper check before any new battery goes in.
