What Size Split System Do You Need?

Getting the size right matters more than the brand. Too small and the unit runs flat out and still can’t keep up on a 35-degree afternoon. Too big and it switches on and off, wastes power and leaves the room clammy. As a starting point for a Queensland home:

  • Up to 18 m² (bedroom or study): 2.5 kW
  • 18 to 28 m² (main bedroom or small lounge): 3.5 kW
  • 28 to 35 m² (large main bedroom or media room): 5.0 to 5.3 kW
  • 35 to 45 m² (lounge or living and dining): 6.0 to 7.1 kW
  • 45 to 60 m² (open-plan kitchen, dining and living): 7.1 to 8.5 kW
  • Over 60 m² (large open plan or a whole level): 9 kW plus, or multi-head or ducted

Ceiling height, insulation, west-facing windows and how many people use the room all move the number. We check those on site before we quote. For the full breakdown, read our guide to what size air conditioner you need.

Commercial Split System Installation

Plenty of offices, shops, cafés and clinics don’t need ducted. One or two split systems can cool the spaces people actually use, for a lot less outlay. We plan the install around your fit-out and work around trading hours where we can.

Replacing an Old Split System

If your split system is struggling to cool, getting noisy or pushing up the power bill, replacing it often works out cheaper over a few years than repairing it again. Older units also run on refrigerant that’s being phased out, which makes repairs harder and dearer.

We remove the old unit, check whether the existing pipework and circuit can be reused, and fit the new system. If the switchboard needs work to handle it, we do that too. We’re electricians first. More on switchboard upgrades.

Split System Installation FAQs

What is a split system air conditioner?

A split system is an air conditioner with two parts: an indoor unit mounted on the wall and an outdoor unit (the compressor). Refrigerant pipes run between them through a small hole in the wall. Most are reverse cycle, so the same unit cools in summer and heats in winter. It’s the most common way to cool a single room in Brisbane and Ipswich homes.

It depends on the size of the system, the brand, how far apart the indoor and outdoor units sit, and whether the circuit or switchboard needs work. We give you a free written quote after a quick look at the property, so you know the cost before anything starts.

As a rough guide, 2.5 kW suits a bedroom up to about 18 m², 3.5 kW suits 18 to 28 m², and most living areas need somewhere between 5 kW and 8.5 kW. Ceiling height, insulation and afternoon sun all change the answer, so we size every system on site.

Yes. A multi-head system runs two or more indoor units off one outdoor unit. It’s a good option when you want a few rooms covered but only have space outside for one compressor.

We’re a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Dealer, and we also install Daikin, Fujitsu and Panasonic. We’ll recommend the model that suits the room and your budget, not the one with the biggest margin.
