A charger that looks identical to a competitor on a spec sheet can behave very differently once it’s metering solar surplus in real time or negotiating a managed connection with the network. That’s where the brand and the installer both start to matter.
SolaX: the default for most single-phase homes
SolaX is what we fit on the majority of standard single-phase installs, and there’s a reason it’s the default rather than an upsell. It handles load limiting, scheduling and solar surplus charging without extra hardware bolted on, and it slots straight into Energex’s active device management pathway for homes without an existing solar brand preference.
On a two-storey Brisbane home we wired recently, cable routing ran through an existing hallway light between floors rather than opening walls. The SolaX unit went in on a dedicated 32A circuit with CT metering behind the finished wallbox, nameplate rated at 32A/7.2kW, and it’s set to start charging automatically once solar surplus is available during the day.
Sungrow: the pick if you already run Sungrow solar
Sungrow is our primary solar and battery brand, so if your roof already runs Sungrow panels or a Sungrow battery, a Sungrow charger sits in the same app and the same ecosystem as everything else on your property. There’s no second app to manage and no guessing whether two brands are actually talking to each other properly.
For households already invested in one ecosystem, this is less about the charger being “better” in isolation and more about not adding a third system to a home that already has two.
Sigenergy: for homes already on the platform
If your solar, battery and gateway already run on Sigenergy, adding a Sigenergy charger brings everything under one roof, literally one app for generation, storage and charging. We fitted one recently on a home already running a full Sigenergy setup, with the charger deliberately capped at 20A/4.8kW to stay within the property’s existing load capacity and avoid a switchboard upgrade that wasn’t otherwise needed.
That’s the appeal of a matched system: the charger doesn’t just plug into the wall, it plugs into decisions the household already made about how their energy gets generated and stored.
Tesla Wall Connector: works, but you’re supplying it
We regularly install customer-supplied Tesla Wall Connectors for Tesla owners who’ve already bought the hardware. On one recent job, the existing three-phase switchboard was completely full, so we designed and installed a dedicated sub-board to house the EV circuit alongside the original board, with full Energex documentation lodged as part of the install.
That’s a straightforward job for a licensed electrician regardless of brand. The unit itself isn’t something we stock or sell directly, but if you’ve already got one, or you’re set on buying one, we’ll wire it in properly and handle the compliance side.
What we won’t do
Plenty of solar-aware chargers on the market, Zappi being one commonly mentioned name, can technically be fitted to an Australian home. We’re upfront that our accreditation and ongoing support sit with SolaX, Sungrow and Sigenergy, plus customer-supplied units like Tesla’s. If a charger falls outside that list, ask your installer directly what happens if it needs a firmware fix or a warranty claim in eighteen months, because that’s the question a glossy comparison chart never answers.
How to actually choose between them
Start with what’s already on your roof, not the charger. If you’ve got Sungrow or Sigenergy solar or battery hardware, matching the charger to it removes a layer of complexity you don’t need. If you’re starting from scratch with no existing solar brand, SolaX is the sensible default for a single-phase home.
A few practical questions worth answering before you call anyone:
- Does your home run single-phase or three-phase power
- What’s your daily driving distance, since it decides whether 7kW is enough
- Do you already have solar or a battery, and which brand
- Is your switchboard modern enough to take an extra circuit without an upgrade
- Do you want the charger to draw from solar surplus automatically
None of these questions have a universal right answer. They depend on your property, which is exactly why a real site visit beats a generic top-ten list every time.
Getting the install right matters more than the badge on the unit
A well-matched charger badly installed will cause more problems than a mid-tier charger installed properly. Energex’s rules for single-phase chargers drawing over 20A require an approved connection pathway, and getting that wrong can mean a charger that works but isn’t compliant, which becomes your problem at insurance time or if the connection gets audited later.
Book a switchboard upgrade ahead of the EV installation if your site visit flags an older board that can’t take the extra load. Buying through a retailer checked against the Clean Energy Council’s approved seller list adds another layer of protection before you even get to the installation itself.
