Yes, a solar EV charger works, and once the switchboard is sized properly it is one of the more straightforward jobs we do. The part most homeowners never ask about is timing, and that is the detail that decides whether the setup actually pays for itself or just moves your power bill around.

How a solar EV charger actually works
There is no such thing as an EV-only solar panel. Your solar system feeds power into your switchboard the same way it feeds the fridge, the lights and the air conditioner. If the EV charger is wired into that board, and the sun is out while the car is plugged in, the car draws from the same pool of power as everything else running in the house.
Here is the flow in plain terms. Panels generate, the inverter turns that into usable power, the switchboard sends it out, and whatever the house is not using goes to the car, or gets exported to the grid if the car is not plugged in. Nothing about a solar EV charger needs special panels. It is a standard solar system paired with a charger that happens to run during daylight hours.
Why timing decides if your solar EV charger pays off
A standard home solar system without a battery exports any power the house is not using, usually for a feed in tariff that is a fraction of what you pay to buy power back. Plug the car in at 10am on a weekday and it draws off that excess generation, power you would otherwise be selling for a few cents a kilowatt hour. That is a genuinely good outcome.
Plug in at 7pm after work and the panels knocked off hours ago. You are charging on grid power like any other household, solar system or not. A car on charge at midnight does not know or care whether the driveway was sunny or overcast that afternoon.
Three ways this plays out at home
Home during the day is the best case. The car sits on the drive from mid-morning, drawing straight off the panels, and the charge costs next to nothing beyond what you are already generating.
A full-time worker home by six charges off the grid at night without a battery. Add a battery and it captures the midday solar, then releases it that evening, so the car still runs mostly on sunshine, just a few hours delayed.
Home some days and out on others calls for scheduling. Set the charger to run during daylight hours on the days you are around, rather than letting it default to whatever time you happen to plug it in that evening.
Does a battery make your solar EV charger better value?
A battery stores the solar you generate through the day and lets you use it that evening instead of exporting it for a low return. For EV charging, that means the car can run mostly on your own solar even if it is only ever plugged in after dark.
Whether a battery pays for itself depends on your driving, your feed in tariff and how much power the house uses once the sun goes down. That is a real sum with real numbers behind it, not a rule of thumb, and it is worth running properly before spending on a battery.
The switchboard question before you buy a solar EV charger
An EV charger is one of the biggest continuous loads a home will ever carry, often bigger than the air conditioner, and it runs for hours at a stretch rather than cycling on and off. Add that to an existing solar system, and a board that coped fine with the house as it was can come up short fast.
We see this constantly in older Ipswich homes still running the original board from the seventies or eighties.
- Main switch undersized for the added load
- No spare ways for another circuit
- Ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers
- Little or no safety switch protection on existing circuits
None of that copes with a charger holding a load for six hours straight.
There is also a rule from Energex, the network operator for South East Queensland, worth knowing before you settle on a charger size. Any single-phase charger drawing more than 20 amps needs active device management arranged before installation, which affects both charging speed and how much lead time the job needs.

Smart solar EV chargers vs standard chargers
A standard charger draws full power the second you plug in, solar or not. A smart solar EV charger, sometimes sold as an excess solar or solar diverter charger, only pulls from whatever the house is not using, ramping up and down through the day as the aircon or the oven draws more or less power.
It is the difference between charging on solar by accident and charging on solar on purpose. If you are mostly charging overnight regardless, the solar matching feature will not earn its keep. If you are home during the day and want to squeeze every bit of self-generated power into the car without watching an app, it is the piece that makes that happen on its own.
